Will these services accept my insurance (Aetna, Cigna, BCBS, UHC)? +
Insurance acceptance varies by platform, plan and employer. During our testing we timed verifications and saw confirmation windows range from 1–7 days. Some services bill insurers directly; others provide a superbill you submit yourself. Always upload your insurance card, check in-app insurer lists, and ask the platform whether they bill your specific plan to avoid surprise charges.
How fast will I be matched with a therapist? +
Matching speed depends on therapist availability, specialty and whether you use insurance. In our tests most matches occurred within 48 hours–3 weeks. Faster matches often come with broader therapist pools or paid matching services. If quality matters more than speed, expect a few extra days for specialty matches; switching therapists is usually possible but policies and wait times vary by platform.
Should I choose live video, messaging, or a combined plan? +
For weekly talk therapy, live video most closely mirrors in‑person sessions and is best for real‑time work. Messaging is cheaper and good for check‑ins or supplementary support, but responses are often asynchronous and not a substitute for weekly sessions. Combined plans give flexibility. Consider therapy goals, budget and whether you need structured weekly time with a clinician.
Can I get medication management or psychiatry through these platforms? +
Some platforms offer psychiatry or medication-management services staffed by MDs or psychiatric NPs; others refer out. Medication decisions are medical and not the same as psychotherapy. Our clinician reviewer, Ana Reyes, LCSW, reviewed how each service presents these programs. Expect separate intake steps, higher appointment fees, and state licensing restrictions that can limit availability.
What happens if I'm in crisis or need urgent help? +
Online therapy services are not a substitute for emergency care. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For suicidal or mental health crisis support in the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Crisis escalation policies vary by platform; we reviewed published safety and emergency procedures with Ana Reyes, LCSW. If you have active suicidal intent or harm risk, seek emergency services rather than online therapy.
